Frascineto is one of the Arbëreshë villages of the Pollino, a few kilometres from Civita: Arbërisht is still spoken here and the liturgy follows the Byzantine rite. The church of Santa Maria Assunta has an iconostasis of the Russian school.

The village has two municipal museums: one of traditional Albanian costume, with the dress of the different communities, and one of icons and the Byzantine tradition. On the Tuesday after Easter, Frascineto and its hamlet of Eianina dance the Vallje, costumed dances that recall Skanderbeg’s victory of 1467.

From here the road climbs into the Pollino, and Civita with the Raganello gorge is a quarter of an hour away.

A tip from someone who lives here

«If you can, come on the Tuesday after Easter for the Vallje: the programme is announced each year by the town council.»
